Circuits of Exchange

Marcus Manh Cuong Vu screened The Unknown Rebels’ stop-motion short, entitled The Journey Unkown, near the end of the 6th Annual Southeast Asian Cinemas Conference in Ho Chi Minh City last weekend. You can read about the conference in Vietnamese language here, then scroll down for Poly’s earlier post about The Unkown Rebels. Although this conference was mostly academic, there were a number of very interesting filmmakers and programmers, like Anderson Le, one of the producers of Saigon Yo, and programming director of the Hawaii festival, as well as Veronika Kusumaryati from the OK.Video Festival in Jakarta. Remember to look into the Yxine Film Festival. Image: Unknown Rebels.
The English daily, Vietnam News, hands Victor Vu the microphone today. At the conference, Charlie and Khoa and Phuong had a lot to say … but I was keen to hear from Sherman Ong, a director from Singapore. Indeed, with the large population of Thai people in the audience I was expecting somebody to say that Apichatpong Weerasethakul deserved some credit for winning the Palme d’Or at Cannes this year … for Southeast Asia … alas, he taught at the Film Studies Program in 2007 for one month … lucky k2.
