Ray at the Lincoln Center
By Dean Wilson
The Film Society of the Lincoln Center in New York is holding a Satyajit Ray retrospective from 15 to 30 April 2009. In collaboration with Columbia University, the program includes 21 films. The great Indian director won an Academy Award before his death in 1992. He made thirty-seven films in his long and varied career. The retrospective follows on the heals of recent changes at the Film Society.
In this sequence from Nayak (1958), the playwright older brother says: “… there is glamor in movies, but there is no art there.” Enjoy: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FQQm7P3cz6A

I’ve seen Pather Panchali (Song of the Little Road) – the first of The Apu Trilogy. And if i have to say something about the film, I only can say that It’s not a film, it’s real. Ray told an everyday story with simply beautiful but powerful images which made me smile and even cry unconsciously…
